Vietnamese rowers eye Olympics

HA NOI – The four-woman Vietnamese rowing team hope to do well at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia in order to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The veteran team consists of Pham Thi Hue, Pham Thi Thao, Pham Thi Hai and Tran Thi Sam, who will compete in the two-oar rowing category.

According to the event's organising board, just two out of 12 teams from Asia – Viet Nam and China – have qualified for the event, which runs from August 28 to September 4.

Last November, hosts China won the two-oar rowing event at the 16th Asian Games, while Viet Nam finished with the silver.

At the recent ASEAN Rowing Championships, Viet Nam won six golds, two silvers and one bronze medal.

The Vietnamese team will leave for Slovenia tomorrow.

The best 1,213 rowers from 68 countries will compete in Bled, considered one of the most beautiful rowing courses in the world.

Most of the rowing teams are expected to arrive in Slovenia this weekend.
