Vietnam Confiscates One Ton Of Elephant Tusks on the way to China

HANOI, Vietnam -- Vietnamese authorities say they have uncovered more than a ton of elephant tusks that smugglers were attempting to illegally take to China.

Customs official Ly Tran Tuan says the 221 pieces of tusks were discovered Sunday hidden in rolls of fabric that were being transported on a boat on the Ka Long river bordering the two countries.

Tuan said Monday that a Chinese man who was escorting the boat and the Vietnamese captain were detained by local police for further investigation.

Vietnam bans the hunting of its dwindling elephant population. In 2009, authorities confiscated nearly 7 tons of elephant tusks smuggled from Tanzania in the country's biggest ivory seizure.

Tusks are used for ivory jewelry and home decorations.

Vàng giảm giá, vác bao tải tiền đi mua

Hôm qua, 20.10, hàng chục chiếc máy đếm tiền của SJC chạy hết công suất, để phục vụ cả trăm người chờ đợi, chen chúc nhau chờ mua vàng. Đứng ngay chỗ máy lạnh đang phà hơi lạnh ngắt của phòng kế toán, nơi giao vàng cho khách mua số nhiều, thuộc trụ sở công ty SJC trên đường Nguyễn Công Trứ, quận 1, TP.HCM, mà lưng áo hai ông Trần Hưng L. và Nguyễn Kh. ướt đẫm mồ hôi. Cái nóng bức giữa trưa cộng với nỗi căng thẳng khi chở bao tiền gần 7 tỉ đồng trên xe máy từ nhà ở quận 5 lên quận 1, khiến cho mồ hôi cứ vậy mà tuôn. Phải vác bao tiền từ đường vào cửa văn phòng, hai ông lại phải vác bao tiền sang ngân hàng bên cạnh để kiểm đếm.


Vất vả mua vàng

Ông Trương Công Nhơn, phó tổng giám đốc công ty SJC cho biết: “Khi giá mỗi lượng vàng trong sáng ngày 20.10 giảm xuống dưới 43 triệu đồng, có hiện tượng người dân đổ xô mua vàng”. Do lượng tiền mặt phải kiểm đếm quá nhiều, công ty SJC phải nhờ các ngân hàng lân cận kiểm đếm. Khi có giấy xác nhận số lượng tiền, khách cầm giấy vào SJC nhận vàng.

Khách chen nhau mua vàng, bãi xe của công ty SJC quá tải, một số điểm giữ xe chung quanh văn phòng SJC lúc đầu lấy giá tiền gửi xe gắn máy chỉ 5.000 đồng/chiếc, sau họ nâng lên xe số là 10.000 đồng, xe tay ga lên đến 20.000 đồng/chiếc. Người giữ xe cười bảo: “Mua vàng tiền tỉ, tiếc gì tiền gửi xe”.

Nhìn tỷ lệ nam giới chiếm đến hơn 80% và toàn là những người có vóc dáng vạm vỡ, đang đứng chen chân trong số cả trăm người chờ mua vàng ở trụ sở SJC có thể thấy đi mua vàng là công việc nặng nhọc và khá vất vả. Thử nhấc bao tiền có chiều cao khoảng 70cm, bề ngang khoảng 50cm và bề dày chừng 30cm, đựng trong túi vải màu xanh lục đậm của ông Văn H. ở quận 12, nặng đến cả chục ký. Ông Văn H. bảo có thể mua được trên 200 lượng, nhưng từ chối không cho biết số tiền cụ thể.

Cứ theo số tiền mang đến hay vàng mang về, khách mua thuộc dạng khá. Nhưng gần như tất cả những khách đến mua vàng ở đây đều có cách ăn mặc khá tuềnh toàng. Hiếm người mang giày tây, đa phần mang dép da, dép xỏ ngón, mặc áo thun và đặc biệt là gần như tất cả đều mặc áo khoác và quần lửng hoặc kaki dài có nhiều túi.

Bằng những thao tác có vẻ thuần thục, khi đưa hoá đơn để nhận 158 lượng vàng, ông Hưng L. xếp toàn bộ vàng trên mặt quầy, đếm, rồi xem kỹ các đường hàn giáp mí của vỏ bọc nhựa trên từng dây. Với những miếng vàng lẻ, ông còn rờ tay vuốt kỹ các cạnh xem có miếng nào bị bung hở mí hay bị trầy nhiều thì đề nghị nhân viên SJC cho đổi lấy miếng mới hơn. Ông Nguyễn Kh. dùng dây thun chập ba sợi, cột vàng thành từng cụm, gói vào bọc nilông, rồi sau đó ông anh chia ra đút đầy vào túi trong áo khoác, túi hộp trên quần kaki. Toàn bộ diễn ra chỉ hơn một phút.

Mua vàng vẫn chỉ dùng tiền mặt

Hỏi ông Văn H. có sợ khi mang lượng tiền mặt quá lớn đi ngoài đường phố, ông trả lời: “Đã từng mang như thế, nên quen rồi”. Trong ngày 20.10, gần như không một khách mua vàng nào đựng tiền trong vali hay túi xách du lịch hàng hiệu, túi sang trọng, mà gần như tất cả các khách đến mua vàng ở văn phòng công ty SJC đều đựng tiền trong túi nilông đen (loại đựng rác), thùng giấy đựng mì gói, túi vải dù cũ kỹ.

Tính đến 16 giờ ngày 20.10, SJC đã bán ra khoảng 12.000 lượng vàng. Tính theo giá vàng trong ngày, thì số tiền mà các nhân viên kiểm đếm lên đến hơn 500 tỉ đồng với đủ các loại mệnh giá khác nhau. Bà Trần Ngọc Minh Thư, trưởng phòng kinh doanh vàng của SJC cho biết, do giá vàng biến động quá nhanh, nên công ty không thể mua bán bằng chuyển khoản với khách. Bà Thư kể, có trường hợp khách vừa chốt giá xong, trong vòng 5 – 10 phút, tiền chưa thấy chuyển đến công ty, mà giá vàng trên thị trường lại giảm xuống, thế là khách bỏ luôn không mua nữa. Có khi ngược lại, khách chốt giá, chờ đến vài giờ đồng hồ, giá vàng tăng thêm từ vài trăm đến cả triệu đồng/lượng, công ty phải chịu lỗ khá nặng. Chính vì vậy dù khách mua lẻ vài lượng hay mua số nhiều vài trăm đến cả ngàn lượng thì SJC đều chọn cách thanh toán ngay.

Ông Trương Công Nhơn nói thêm: “Việc thanh toán bằng chuyển khoản qua các ngân hàng ở Việt Nam hiện nay còn khá chậm, nhất là từ ngân hàng này qua ngân hàng khác, nên khó thực hiện giao dịch mua bán nhận vàng ngay mà không dùng tiền mặt”

During my education in America since the 4th grade back in 1975 and throughout my College years I did managed to learned and experienced the difference between the Democratic Party and the Republican party. One of the main differences is foreign affairs, of which the last time during the George W. Bush there were over 20 Asians working in the White House mostly under the Secretary of Labor, Elaine Chao, a Chinese American.

I was taught that Democrats favor the poor and wants to spend our money on building roads, bridges, schools, etc…while Republicans favor the rich and spends our money overseas. However, Democrats rejected a bill to raise minimum wage.

Remember our country is a melting pot of many and that is the direct result of the Republican Party handling of foreign affairs. Basically, to keep the cash flow going, we borrow from the banks where Americans keep their savings. Whether to build weapons for wars or spend it internally, we will always have a deficit. I personally favor getting money from abroad versus squeezing Americans. Business always better under Republican watch during my life time as a businessman.

The bottom line is we are one country, run by one group of people, and they are not you and me, but they do have the power to put whoever they want in the white house, simple as that.

Gender imbalance leaves millions of Vietnamese men single by 2020

Vietnam is facing with challenges in family planning, including a birth gender imbalance, which tends to increase over the years. The number of Vietnamese males will be about 2.3-4.3 million more than that of females by 2020.

The statement was made here on Wednesday by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan during a seminar themed, "New- born gender imbalance: Solutions and Orientation for the Future", held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health (MOH) and the United Nations (UN) in Vietnam.

Nhan said the seminar will be a good opportunity for Vietnamese policy-makers, managers and experts in the field to collect experience and opinions shared by the participants so as to re- orientate the country's policy for family planning development.

According to the Vietnam General Office for Population and Family Planning, Vietnam has faced with a male-surplus situation for years, and by 2025 it is estimated that there would be over 3 million males in surplus.

The country is also influenced by regional gender imbalance impacts when a number of Vietnamese women marry to foreigners.

The office also reported that a project to reduce the birth gender imbalance during 2011-2020 was submitted to the government for approval, under which synchronous solutions are set to solve the problem.

During the two-day conference, delegates from 11 countries and regions and from international and non-government organizations in Vietnam will share experience in handling with birth gender imbalance.

'Miss Asia San Diego' pageant are looking into whether the wrong woman was crowned over the weekend

SAN DIEGO -- According to 10News, which has learned organizers of the 'Miss Asia San Diego' pageant are looking into whether the wrong woman was crowned over the weekend.

"This is definitely upsetting," said Theresa Nguyen, the president of the Little Saigon Foundation, which organized the pageant.

Organizers are now investigating accusations brought to them by 1st runner-up Kristen Paruginog. In an email sent to 10News, Paruginog's mother said after the pageant, the emcee who announced the winner confessed to Paruginog she was nervous and misread the card. The crowned winner UCSD student Martina Lo was actually in fourth place and Paruginog was the real winner.

According to the Paruginog family, the emcee admitted the mistake "in front of three witnesses" and "showed Kristen the score cards."

When asked how the mix-up could have happened, Nguyen responded, "We're not sure. That's why we're reviewing the facts. We are treating this very seriously. These girls worked for months and we want to right person to be crowned," said Nguyen.

Organizers said it has taken a few days to sort out because they need to verify the scores from each category in the competition with all five judges.

The pageant, which was held at Hoover High School, received plenty of publicity. The winner would receive a $3,000 scholarship and a prize package that includes jewelry, makeup and a makeover.

Nguyen expects to have a final decision within a few days. The Paruginog family is contemplating a lawsuit if the result is not changed. Paruginog declined to be interviewed.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A court in northern Vietnam has sentenced six people to death for heroin trafficking.

The State-run Tuoi Tre newspaper said Wednesday the six were convicted of trafficking 73 pounds (33 kilograms) of heroin from 2007-2009.

Four other defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment on the same charges at the trial at the People's Court in Hoa Binh province.

The court handed down jail terms from one year to 20 years against 11 others for illegal drug trading or failure to report criminals to authorities.

The trial ended Tuesday.

Confident or Conceited

Confidence is defined as a feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance in one’s circumstances. Being confident, sounds so easy but being able to walk into a room and feel completely comfortable with yourself inside and out is not an easy task for many of us. A conceited person will walk into that same room and feel insecure about his/herself but instead of showing it will tell everyone how great they are.
     Conceit is shown by people who not only are not critical towards themselves, but also underestimate their own self worth. They can only see the good side of themselves, they have no bad side. With a conceited person everything is/was easy to do and they never acknowledge a mistake was made on their part. They always think they have the answers and their’s is the best answer. We have all seen them, the loudest one in the room telling stories of themselves and what they have, will, or have already done. Conceited people have an excessively high opinion of their abilities, appearance, and material things. These people will like to show off quite a lot and will tell you how what you have is not as good as what they have.  They constantly boast about how “confident” they are and how they always speak their mind. I have met people before who boasted about how no one will talk to them this way or do treat them any kind of way, they tend to be very rude and you can just see the insecurity in them. It always makes me think of the saying “his bark is worse than his bite”.
     When a person is confident, they never have to tell you they are. They will just exude confidence. They are not afraid to admit making mistakes and has a plan on how to not make that mistake again. Confidence isn’t about proving to anyone else just how great you are, it’s a feeling you have inside that just shows to everyone around. I am always in awe of truly confident people. It is so incredible the way every action they make is just another fact showing their confidence.
