An infant went missing at the Hanoi-based National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology on Thursday, allegedly kidnapped by a woman posing as a health worker.
According to Tran Thi Thom, 34, the baby's mother, at around 10.30 a.m. on November 3, a woman at between 25 to 27 years old wearing a white blouse told the family she was taking the baby, who was born two days earlier, for some tests.
About one hour later, when the woman didn’t come back, the baby's family rushed to ask doctors in charge what had happened to their son, and were told that the baby would be returned soon.
After 1 p.m., when the baby still had not returned, doctors went to the testing room and found that the baby had never been there, Thom said.
The infant was still nowhere to be found later that day.
Nguyen Viet Tien, director of the hospital and also the deputy health minister, said his facility will cooperate with police to investigate the case, he told the press.
While stressing that the case was the first-ever for the hospital and very “critical,” Tien said that he was almost sure that the hospital’s health workers did not commit the crime, but that the baby had been stolen by someone posing as a doctor or a nurse, Tuoi Tre reported on November 4.
The newspaper also quoted the official as saying that the baby’s family would be reviewed as well, because there was a chance that it was involved in personal conflicts.
